Hair: Stick to My Regime!

Hot Country

I am forever experimenting with products and changing my hair care routine! Its like my fingers just get the itch to dip into new products. Im fedup of this! Ive had so many setbacks because of my own experiments....

In the beginning of February I decided to try out grapefruit juice all over my hair... The results were disastrouand I had to cut off about 1.5 inches of hair....

And I keep sneaking to the beauty store and trying moisturisers/creams/greases that may contain mineral oil or petroleum. I need to remind myself often that once a product has mineral oil or petroleum it will not work on my hair and will result in dryness/knots/breakge. Ugh.

One thing I know for sure is I need to avoid mineral oil & petroleum (although my deep conditioners do contain these for now). I also need to avoid silicones where possible.

So this is really to remind myself to stick to what is working right now.

The Black Barbie Issue

For Barbie's 50th anniversary Vogue produced 'the Black Barbie Issue'

Love it! Beautiful imagery.

A few years ago I remember tediously trying to search for images of "black barbies" and very little appeared surprisingly.

The Secret Life of Bees

I finally watched 'The Secret Life of Bees' (2008), I wanted to see it since it was released but never got the chance.

This is one of the films that belongs in my 'spirit-touchers' collections - i.e. films that make me think deeply and get me stirred emotionally.

This film takes a nice angle on illustrating some of the pressures African-Americans had to go through back in the day.

Of course, I love seeing the ladies with natural looking hair!

Although, my husband said "Are you sure thats Alicia Keys? I thought she was white". My mouth froze for a minute! Huh?!

I was surprised he genuinely meant this, but it was also very interesting. It made me wonder about the image singers are portraying with the makeup; hair extensions; bright lighting; airbrushing....

My favourite character was 'May', a woman who had suffered a great loss and was super-sensitive to the pain and wrongdoings in the world. I could really understand her character and the feelings she must have had. I am officially a big fan of Sophie Okonedo, who played the character  of May excellently.

PS. I think its very classy that Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith where producers of this film without appearing in the movie.
